Do I need a CFO or a Controller?

Quick Links

It’s kind of a backward question.

They hire a CFO first, then realize the books were never clean enough to support the strategy the CFO was brought in to build.

CFO vs. Controller: 4 Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Do you have a controller? If the answer is no, you’re probably not ready for a CFO.
  2. Are your monthly books accurate and closed on time? No: start with a controller. Nothing else works until this is fixed.
  3. Do you need forecasts, KPIs, or a growth strategy built on top of those numbers? No: a controller may be all you need right now.
  4. Are you facing a fundraise, an acquisition, or a major system change? Yes: you need a CFO, usually paired with a controller underneath them.

A controller protects the past. A CFO builds the future. Most companies eventually need both, just not on the same timeline.
